the eureka Stockade

The
soldiers and police attacked the diggers and some of the diggers where
killed on the 3rd of December 1854 at the Eureka Stockade.
The
battle took place because one of the miners was killed and they were
also angry about paying for there licenses. The miners were also fed up
with the police.
The
stockade was only a wooden barricade enclosing about an acre of the
goldfields. The battle lasted for 15 - 20 minutes. Five soldiers were
killed and thirty diggers were killed or later died of their wounds.
The
immediate results were that license hunting became almost non-existent
and the Victorian jury acquitted all but one of all 13 miners was
charged.
After this battle the miners did not have to
pay for their licences and they had the right to vote for the
government.
Some people say that the Eureka Stockade was
the beginning of Australian democracy.
