The Eureka Stockade

On the 3rd of December 1854 at dawn, 200 miners attacked and fought against soldiers and police on Bakery Hill at the Eureka Stockade.

The Eureka Stockade battle occurred because the miners were furious about laws from the government about licence fees and they were sick of corruption that took place.

The Stockade was only a wooden barricade enclosing about an acre of the goldfields. The battle was over in 15-20 minutes. Five soldiers were killed and 30 diggers were killed or later killed of their injuries.

The result of the battle was gold licenses were abolished and miners were now able to vote in elections for parliament.

The Eureka Rebellion is considered by many people to be the start of Australian Democracy.
