Shark Bay

 

Shark Bay is a located on the most western point of the coast of Western Australia.  It is just over 700 km north of Perth. 


Shark Bay covers an area of 2.3 million hectares and has many islands.          


The shallow waters of Shark Bay are alive with marine life.  There are dugongs and many species of fish.  Manta rays, turtles, whales and dolphins can also be found here. At Monkey Mia on the Peron Penisula the dolphins come in and interact with the visitors.


Shark Bay has large areas of seagrass and the longest wild flower season of any part of WA and has over 700 species of flowering plants.


At the Hamelin Pool, in the south part of the bay, the stromatolites of the Hamelin pool are among the oldest fossils of life on Earth.
